December 2001: New Lanark, Lanarkshire (top) and the Dorset and East Devon Coast are
declared World Heritage Sites.
New Lanark, on the banks of the
River Clyde in Scotland, was founded
in 1785 as a purpose-built village for
textile workers and subsequently
managed by Robert Owen, who
provided housing, healthcare and
educational opportunities in the hope
of creating a model community.
The 'Jurassic Coast' of Dorset and
East Devon is rich in fossils and has
long been an area of great scientific
interest.
