| Description | Next best' by Bertram Prance. This cartoon shows wounded man in a hospital bed being visited by an elderly woman dressed in her Sunday best. The caption reads: 'THE NEXT BEST. / THE MINISTERING ANGEL: "HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE HABIT OF GOING TO CHURCH?" / THE SUFFERER (ex-Taxi Driver): "NO, MUM, CAN'T SAY AS 'OW I 'AVE; BUT (hopefully) I'VE DROVE PEOPLE THERE LOTS OF TIMES." ' 'Sea-Pie' included cartoons by some of the most promising illustrators of the day. Bertram Prance (1889-1958) became very well known as a cartoonist and illustrator in the 1920s and 30s, for his contributions to 'Punch' and 'The Humorist' magazines, and later for his illustrations for Malcolm Saville's children's books. In later life he increasing turned to landscape oil painting, his work still being shown in his native Devon today. |
