Written in commemoration of the Battle of La Hogue, May 19-23, i6g2, for which victory
Russel received the thanks of Parliament in November of the sartie year. However, ques¬
tions were raised why he had not followed up his victory better, and early in the next year
he was dismissed the service. He was, later on, May, 1697, created Earl of Orford.
