*,* Second edition of this allegorical poem of knight-errantry.
The first edition was published without date, but from the date to
the dedication it is thought to have been printed in 1517. The
text, the types, and the woodcuts of the second edition are the
same as in the first, only some alterations are introduced into the
orthography, and into the flourishes. The work was written by
Pfintzing between 1512 and 1516, for the edification of the King
of Spain, afterwards the Emperor Cliarles v., taking as his ground¬
work notes which the secretary of the Emperor Maximilian i.,
took down from the dictation of his master. It tells of the ad¬
ventures of Maximilian under the name of Tewrdannckh, in woo¬
ing and winning Mary of Burgundy. It is an extraordinary
specimen of topography, the letterpress being supplemented by
elegant flourishes printed from woodblocks in imitation of the
curves and interlaoings of the writing of that period.
