Self Reflection

Book and Chemise in the shape of an Octopus.

The Book block is made from hand dipped paper to which a mixture of peppermint, lavender, thyme and seaweed is added. An image of an Octopus eye, printed on transparent paper, is added in the second section. The book block is cut into shape.

The book block is sewn with double loops on two coloured, four double plastic raised sewing supports. The sewing supports are laced at an angle through the boards. They are trimmed down at the front board and left at full length at the back board, suggesting the tentacles of the Octopus. Beads are added to the back board and at the end of each sewing support, suggesting the suckers.

The front and back boards are made from moulded polystyrene with embedded shells and seaweed, cut into shape suggesting the beak consisting of two crushing plates to crush shellfish and crabs.

The chemise is made from canvas and cotton, cut and stitched into shape and padded. It is stained with an irregular pattern. 531 beads are added to the tentacles. Two miniature booklets, the eyes, are added to the chemise. These booklets are made of glued book blocks, with self sprinkled endpapers, cut into shape, covered with white silk and a black ribbon as pupil. The mouth of the Octopus accommodates the two boards (crushing plates) and sewing supports (tentacles) of the book (miniature octopus).

The chemise and book could be regarded as two independent Octopuses, having different colours to show its capability of camouflage, adjusting to its environment.
