Hangchow, the capital of the province of Chekiang, is .situated 120 miles south¬
west of Shanghai, and 110 miles sout^ of Spochow, adjacent tp the Chien-tang River
(the Green River of Robert Fortune’s famous journeys to the neighbouring tea districts),
at the apex of a bay which is too shallow for the navigation of steamers. The mouth

Shanghai. Steam launches ply regularly td and from Shanghai and Soochow, with
passenger boats in tow, making the trip in from. d8 to 24 hours. Launches ply daily to
Huchow and other places en routej-adso on Chi’ien T’ang river thereiare daily launches to
r uyang, Tunglu, Linpu, etc.,—a service that; started ini I912i Hardly any cargo is
earned by the latter between Hangchovl and.* Sodchow. ; These launches go wfd Huchow
and Nanzin, and a service is glsq maintjtippd between-Reeliing, Soochow and several
