HYMNS.
352, 353
352.
, The Church's Prayer under Persecution.
■ i /'IJ.REAT Shepherd of thine Israel,
^ Who didst between the cherubs dwell.
And lead the tribes, thy chosen sheep,
: Safe through the desert and the deep :
11 Thy church is in the desert now,
! Shine from on high and guide us through;
Turn us to thee, thy love restore,
We shall be sav’d, and sigh no more,
p; Great God, whom heav’nly hosts obey.
How long shall we lament and pray.
And wait in vain thy kind return ?
i How long shall thy fierce anger burn ?
I Instead of wine and cheerful bread,
j Thy saints with their own tears are fed;
Turn us to thee, thylove restore,
We shall be sav’d, and sigh no more.
353.
,j God, our defence under Persecution. Ps. iii.
1 T ORD, how my num’rous foes increase !
How fast my troubles rise !
' To thee, the sacred spring of peace,
£ My weary spirit flies.
2 My num’rous foes awake my fears,
® While they exulting boast,
f “ No heav’nly aid for him appears,
i “ And all his hopes are lost.”
5 But thou, my glory and my shield.
Wilt all my fears control;
A strong defence thy arm shall yield,
t- And raise my drooping soul. '
I What tho’ ten thonsand foes, iu arras,
! Against me should appear;
