HYMNS.

jj The evil Heart Jer. xvii. 9. Matth. xv. 19.
A STONISH’D and distress’d
I turn mine eyes within ;
i!My heart with loads of guilt opprest,
I, The seat of ev’ry sin.
• What crowds of evil thoughts,
! What vile affections there 1
Distrust, presumption, artful guile,
Pride, envy, slavish fear.
Almighty King of saints,
; These tyrant lusts subdue;
''Expel the darkness of my mind,
| And all my pow’rs renew.
j This done, my cheerful voice
i Shall loud hosannas raise;
pMy soul shall glow with gratitudp,
My lips proclaim thy praise.
; 88.
The Deceitfulness of Sin.
gIN has a thousand treach’rous arts
■ To practise on the mind :
With flatt’ring looks she tempts our hearts,
But leaves a sting behind.
With names of virtue she deceives
The aged and the young;
And while the heedless wretch believes.
She makes his fetters strong.
She pleads for all the joys she brings,
j And gives a fair pretence;
But cheats the soul of heav’nly things,
l And chains it down to sense.
So on a tree divinely fair
I Grew the forbidden food ;
