word of the Lord tried him.” Psalm cv. 19. “But before all
these they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you,
delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, be¬
ing brought before kings for my name’s sake. And it shall
turn to you for a testimony. In your patience possess ye
your souls.” Luke xxi. 12, 13,19. “To the general assem¬
bly and Church of the first-born, which are written in hea¬
ven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just
men made perfect.” Heb. xii. 23. “ Blessed is the man
that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall
receive the crown of life which the Lord hath promised to
them that love him.” James i. 12. “ Casting all your care
upon him, for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant;
because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh
about seeking whom he may devour.” J Pet. v. 7, 8. “ I
know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open
door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength,
and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Be¬
cause thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep
thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all
the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I
come quickly : hold that fast which thou hast, that no man
take thy crown. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar
in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and
I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of
the city of my God, which is New Jerusalem, which cometh
down out of heaven from my God ; and I will write upon
him my new name.” Rev. iii. 8, 10-12. “And the beast was
taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles
before him, with which he deceived them that had received
the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image.
These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with
brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of ;
him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of
his mouth : and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”

O what can I say to the Lord’s praise 1 It was but little
that I knew of him before I came to prison ; I have found
sensibly much of his divine strength, much of the joy of j
his Spirit, and much assurance from his word and Spirit J
concerning my salvation ; my sufferings are stated upon the 1
