ensued led to a war, which was terminated by treaty in 1848.
During the recent outbreaks in Europe, the United States
looked on without experiencing the slightest commotion. The
citizens indeed at that juncture were chiefly interested in the
discovery that their new territory of California, one of the
fruits of their late war with Mexico, was a large mine of gold.
The extraction of this precious metal has for some time
been extensively pursued both by the Americans themselves
and by adventurers from other countries, and it is probable
that erelong the sands of its rivers may yield a quantity large
enough to exercise a considerable influence on the metallic
currency of the world.
