Like the preceding, this work consists of selections from
popular authors, but more copious and varied, arranged under
the heads Physical Science, Chemistry, Natural History, Geo¬
graphy and Topography, Religious and Moral Pieces, Miscel¬
laneous Pieces, and Poetry. In making the extracts, the object
kept in view was to givea" series of progressive lessons in useful
and entertaining knowledge, rather than a mere compendium
of elegant and rhetorical readings. They have received the
corrections of Dr Greville in the botanical part, of Mr James
