CRITICAL NOTICES
TO THE SECOND EDITION OF THE
BRITISH WINE-MAKER,
AND
DOMESTIC BREWER.
Weekly Dispatch The second edition of a work, which w«
deem invaluable in every family desirous of blending economy with
enjoyment, is now on our table; and if, some months ago, we felt
ourselves bound to speak of it in high terms, our commendation is
now more unequivocally demanded, in consequence of the improve¬
ments which Mr Roberts has since made. Formerly we directed
attention principally to the wine department; we now advert to that
portion of the volume which will be much more generally useful—
that in which every English yeoman is taught how to prepare a
barrel of genuine “ nut-brown ale.” Few will feel inclined to taste
monopolists’ trash, if they once follow Mr Roberts’ hints, and, act¬
ing on them, brew a splendid article for one-fourth of the money.
We feel convinced that many men have recourse to spirits simply
because they cannot obtain wholesome beer. There is, in future, no
excuse for such an alternative, and, had we no other motive than
that of a regard for public morality, we should deem it our duty to
recommend die work.
York Courant This is a book which should be in the posses¬
sion of every respectable family, and of the housekeeper of every
large establishment. The information, which is the result of long
practice, and not the advice of a theorist, is conveyed in perspicuous
and easy language ; and every direction is so minutely concise, that
mistake or failure in reducing it to practice is impossible.
