There are popular qualities which the
w.orld looks for, becaufe it is aware, that
it may be fometimes benefited by their
exertion. Generofity is an excellence, by
the apparent poflcflion of which I have
known many worthlefs chara&ers buoyed
up from their infamy: though with them
it was, indeed, but thoughtlefs profufion ;
and, on the other hand, I have feen ami¬
able men marked out with a fneer by the
million, from a temperance or referved-
nefs of difpofition, which (buns the glare
of public, and the pleatures of convivial
life, and gives to modefty and gentle man-
