THE MOTHER’S PRIMER.
5i
JANE AND THE FIRE.
Little Jane happened to be left one day in the room by
herself. As she was five years old, her mamma thought
her old enough to be trusted alone, but Jane was so
foolish as to play about the fire place, and at last light¬
ed a piece of paper at the fire. In doing this, her
frock caught fire, and as the flames ascended very
quickly, her neck and face were terribly burnt.
Her mamma ran to her assistance, who instantly laid
her down on the floor, and wrapped a large green cloth
very tight about her to put out the flames.
Poor Jane cried sadly, for although mamma saved her
from being entirely burnt to death, yet the skin of her
arms, neck, and face, was dreadfully scorched. It was
many weeks before she could get out of bed, and when
she did recover, her face long retained disagreeable scars.
This sad story should warn all little children to avoid
lighting any thing either at the fire or candle.
