2019
A warm welcome to you all to the 2019 1Royal %ational914od in Glasgow!
9Iuch has changed since the National9V od was last held in the City of the Gaels,
in Govan in 1990, and isn't it a particular cause for pride that Gaelic now enjoys
greater status and political support than it had then. That is not to say however
that the language is not still in a pretty parlous position and there has never been
a more important time for fluent speakers to use their Gaelic as frequently as
possible and also to encourage more learners of the language. These aspirations
will certainly be achieved to some e4ent at the 2019 Royal National Mod in
Glasgow because, although the festival has not taken place here for some time,
Gaelic has been at the heart of this city forgenerations and it has a close affinity
with the Royal National -IAIod: The success of Gaelic .Medium Education here is
further confirmation of recognition for the language, and the support of Glasgow
City Council is extremely important in the growth of education through Gaelic.
Glasgow's great reputation for hospitality will ensure that you will have a very
warm welcome at the 2019 Royal5Vational-IA4od, and I am very confident that
you will find this an enjoyable event. As usual a smalllocalgroup of volunteers
has been working hard to support An Comunn Gaidhealach with the preparation
of this -%fod, and as might be expected some influence of the city will6e apparent
in this year's event.
W
y
warmest thanks to the members of that local committee
and to
ad
the supporters who voluntarily give time and energy to ensure the
staging of annual Provincial -
1
41ods across the country, and the Royal5vational
9Yod.
Th
ese people unquestionably demonstrate a desire for Gaelic to be sustained.
The 1p
yal5Vationa(W od and
1Pr
ovincia(W ods also depend on funding support to
ena6le them and I would like to express sincere thanks to those pu6lic bodies,
and those from the private sector, which faithfully maintain support for the Wod
and for Gaelic. Thanks also to An Comunn's Chief Executive and his small team
of staff for hard workand diligence which rightfully earns esteem for themselves
and their cultural heritage.
This year again we will aim to present more of the Wod events through the
medium of Gaelic, and with very high competitor numbers to draw viewers and
risteners we 6elieve that Glasgow will gain a similar economic 6enefzt to what
other WgyalRationalWodhost towns get each year.
I wish you all an enjoyable and stimulating
week.
