At our AGM, Paddy Shaw was again
returned as our President, with Shiela
Grant as Secretary and Anne Scott as
Treasurer.
Anyone in the Taynuilt area can con¬
tact Morag Robb (Dean Cottage, Bridge
of Awe, Taynuilt) for details of forthcom¬
ing events.
DUNOON BRANCH
With the Mod due to be hosted by
Dunoon in 1994, the Branch is involved
with all the hundred and one things need¬
ed to put on a Mod, and offering support
to the Local Mod Committee.
As a Branch we have been very active
with our monthly ceilidhean being fair to
well-attended. The Ceilidh Dance held in
November was enjoyed by a capacity
audience. Thanks are due to the artistes
who contributed to such an outstanding
event.
In February we have another Ceilidh
Dance in MacColl’s Hotel, Dunoon, at
which we hope to have Freddie
MacKenzie and party from Oban - if the
weather holds out!
On March 18th in the Park Hotel,
Dunoon, we have our annual Bardic
Supper. A talk on a bard of her own
choice will be given by Beathag
Morrison, with songs sung by Morag
Law. We look forward to that date.
We attended two meetings of Argyll
Regional Council. These are important to
us because they keep us in touch with
developments at both regional and nation¬
al levels. Two of our members have been
appointed to the Steering Group set up by
Beathag Morrison: Rev Donald Stewart
and John Saidler, our President.
The Branch tried to interest local
schools to enter the competitions at the
Dunoon Mod, but only Dunoon Grammar
School responded. There is obviously
work to be done in Dunoon. We are now
discussing with Dunoon Grammar the
ways and means by which pupils can
enter the Mod competitions. The Branch
has agreed to set aside a sum of money
for the purchase of a suitable Trophy to
be awarded for a Junior Competition at
the 1994 Mod.
We are saddened by the loss of two of
our most stalwart members. Mary
Crawford, sister of Tom Crawford (Islay),
was a friend to many of us over the years.
Mrs I. M. MacArthur (mother of Elma
who runs our Gaelic classes) also passed
away in her nineties and was buried in her
native Tiree. Time may never stand still,
but our memories will always cherish
these two ladies.
DUMFRIES BRANCH
A full programme of ceilidh events
started last October with the dates of the
1994 ceilidhean as follows: January 14,
11 February, 11 March and April 8 which
will be a special Easter Ceilidh. All
events start at 7 pm and are held in the
George Street Day Centre, Dumfries.
The Branch is fortunate in having full
Press coverage thus keeping the Gaelic
flag flying in an area not immediately
associated with the language. We have a
membership of 57, most of whom attend
our events so the Branch is in very good
heart. Our two honorary pipers are Alf
and Billy Geddes, a father and son combi¬
nation who ensure that the skirl of the
pipes adds that extra special interest at
our functions. Alf has done sterling ser¬
vice in the past and Billy is gradually tak¬
ing over as Alf takes a well-earned
breather though he is far from retiring
from the Dumfries scene.
Our thanks go to John MacRae who
keeps us supplied with first-class and top-
of-the-bill Gaelic singers.
A special thanks, too, goes to Mrs
Happell who has retired from the
Committee on health grounds. She has
given many years’ service to the Branch
and An Comunn and our best wishes go
to her with our sincere appreciation of her
work in ‘the cause’. Our new President is
Tom McCallum, who also acts as our
Treasurer. Secretary Mrs A. B. Shearer,
can be contacted at 2 Minden Avenue,
Dumfries, for details of the events men¬
tioned above.
DUNDEE BRANCH
With due modesty Dundee Branch, as
an offspring of the Dundee Highland
Society, is already planning to celebrate
next year the 180th anniversary of the
founding of the Society, in 1814. So we
are older than An Comunn! That being
said, we are happy to report that the
Gaelic flag is kept flying high in the
Dundee area.
Attendances at our events tends to be
around the 46 mark. Our annual
ceilidh/dance, however, attracts around
James Gunn and Margaret Stewart-Harding, Mod Gold Medallists, 1993.
