CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE 1990
The annual accolade 'European city of culture' celebrates the
individual culture of a city, its region and its links with the broader
European culture. By winning this coveted title Glasgow joins five
other illustrious European cities — Athens (1985), Florence (1986),
Amsterdam (1987), West Berlin (1988) and Paris next year. All of the
diverse and internationally recognised aspects of Glasgow's
flourishing and expanding artistic life are combining to make 1990 a
year of spectacle.
Throughout 1990 the city will be the platform for Britain's most
significant and ambitious programme of cultural events. The attention
of the world will be focussed on the history, heritage, character and
dynamism of a great city now enjoying a real renaissance. The
celebration in 1990 offers unrivalled scope for private sponsorship —
high profile events, improved facilities for the arts, local celebrations,
special commissions and much, much more.
Colin Tweedy, Director of the Association for Business
Sponsorship of the Arts says: "European city of culture year in
Glasgow is probably the biggest single
opportunity in the history
of British arts
sponsorship." For details
