Andrew Greig, the unofficial Poet Laureate of the mountaineering community, was born in Bannockburn in 1951 and studied Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. He is attracted to climbing and writing because both activities give him a sense of being fully alive, fully present. Summit Fever (1985) and Kingdoms of Experience (1986) chronicle his participation in major climbing expeditions. His six books of poetry range from short love lyrics to the epic Men on Ice (1977), an ironic play on the Grail quest where the object of the quest turns out to be a tartan-kitsch penknife. His novels each have very different settings. Electric Brae (1992) was shortlisted for the Boardman-Tasker Prize for mountain writing; The Return of John Macnab (1996) was shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists' Award; When They Lay Bare (1999) is structured around the picture series on a set of plates illustrating the Border ballad 'The Twa Corbies'; and That Summer (2000) evokes the Battle of Britain ina an intense return to a theme originally explored with Kathleen Jamie in the poetry collection A Flame in Your Heart.
