Experiments upon magnesia alba, quick-lime and other alcaline substances

By Joseph Black.
Alembic Club reprints ; no. 1.
Reprint of Joseph Black's account of experiments at Edinburgh University.

Date: Written in 1755.

This reprint of Joseph Black's account of his alkaline experiments was published in 1893 at the Darien Press in Edinburgh. Title Page; Preface; Pages 5-47.

In the preface it states that copies of Black's original paper had become scarce by that time. One of the main reasons for reprinting the paper was:

'To enable students of the history of chemistry to possess themselves of a copy of this most important contribution to the foundation of chemistry as an exact science'.

It describes Black's paper as 'a model of clear reasoning and of inductive investigation, which is second to nothing in chemical literature that has appeared in much more recent times.'
