Letter from Dr Black to James Smithson Esq. describing a very sensible balance

Joseph Black describes the apparatus he uses for weighing items like small globules of metal.

Joseph Black wrote this letter to mineralogist and chemist James Smithson on 18 September 1790. It was a reply to Smithson's letter of 9 September.

The letter includes a small diagram. This show how the numeration is display on the apparatus Black uses for weighing 'small globules of metal, or the like'.

Following Black's letter is a note from Smithson written from London on May 12 1825. He describes Black's little balance as 'a very valuable addition to the blowpipe apparatus'.
