Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty. On two successive occasions whilst doing a shoot he was attacked
by hostile scouts in large superior numbers, all of whom he dispersed and
continued his work.
On another occasion, having by means of the artillery knocked out three
guns of a hostile battery, he descended to 500 feet and dispersed with his
machine-gun a party of the enemy who were endeavouring to remove the
remaining guns. (March 1917.)
Awarded the French Croix de Guerre and the Italian Medaglia a Valore.

Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty. He set a splendid example of coolness and initiative when at a
critical moment a Bangalore torpedo failed to explode. Subsequently he
led the assault on the enemy post with great gallantry, through only partially
cut wire, under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. It was mainly due to
his initiative and soldierly bearing that the raid was so successful. (22nd
April 1918.)
