The Military Cross awarded to T/Lieut. (A/Capt.) James Aitken Brown
Menzies, 208th Siege By., R.G.A., 1st January 1919. During the period under
review, namely 25th February 1918 to 17th September 1918, for gallantry and
devotion to duty, particularly on 9th April 1918, near Sailly-sur-la-Lys, on
which date he was in command of the battery. He showed the greatest cool-
ness and judgment throughout that day, going out himself to repair telephone
lines under heavy shell fire. He personally superintended the disabling of his
guns under heavy shell fire, and was the last to leave the battery position. A
very capable Officer, who has done uniformly good work and shown a fine
example of courage during the seven months he was in the battery. Wounded
severely in the leg in the battery position near Hazebrouck and evacuated to
U.K.

1918.
