In the spring of 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson's family rented a piano. Stevenson began to learn, and approached the task with amateur gusto. The works of Bach were particular favourites:
'Bach is adorable; so singularly unspewy. I wish I could get the Pentecost air with more than one finger; but ... the attempt to introduce the other notes knocks the time to old Harry ...'
