('Unconditional surrender')

The war objective of 'unconditional surrender' was decided at the Casablanca Conference, convened by Churchill, Roosevelt and De Gaulle – Stalin did not attend.

The preceding few months of the war had gone well for the Allies. They felt confident in making the declaration of unconditional surrender, and it put psychological pressure on the Axis powers.
