The true state of the unhappy controversy is a speech given to the Church of Scotland's Associate Presbytery of Earlstown in October 1782. It deals with the two opposing Protestant factions in Scotland at that time - the burghers and the antiburghers.

The Rev John Young, who delivered this speech in Kelso, was a Church of Scotland minister in Hawick.

About the printer

The printer George Caw set up the first printing press in Hawick in 1783. This book is probably the earliest item he produced.

There appears to have been no suitable bookseller in Hawick at that time. The Rev John Young sold the book himself, and it was also for sale at the printing office.
