The doctrine of assurance considered is a letter by the radical James Tytler to John Barclay, an Edinburgh minister. It reveals Tytler's dislike of scepticism, and especially of philosopher David Hume.

About the printer

James Tytler most probably had a home-made press on which he printed this book in Restalrig, then on the outskirts of Edinburgh, in 1774. In the same year, he also produced another religious work and the short-lived Gentleman and lady's magazine on this press.
