Printed: Peebles, 1770
Printer: Unknown printer

One of the earliest products of the first printing press established in Peebles is a poem, Janus a character. It is a satire on a corrupt Scottish priest, probably based on a true story.

About the printer

According to the colophon (a note at the end of a printed item) the poem was printed in Peebles. However, no-one knows the printer's name and the exact year of printing. Cataloguers have tentatively dated the publication to around 1770.

The next work which names Peebles as the printing place was produced 50 years later, in 1820.
