The Declaration and apology of the Protestant people is demand for the re-establishment of Protestantism in Scotland. It was printed on a single sheet for Archibald Campbell, the Marquis of Argyll, in 1685. Protestant propagandaThe first printing press set up in Campbeltown in Kintyre was brought there from Amsterdam by the Marquis of Argyll. Argyll had been in exile in Holland and now returned with a part of his followers to rouse his fellow Protestants and to claim back his lands from the Catholic King James II. For propaganda reasons he needed access to a printing press, and so brought the equipment and the personnel with him. About the printerThe printer, whose identity is unknown, produced The Declaration and apology of the Protestant people in May 1685. Argyll's party was seized by the King's troops in June 1685. The printer was probably exiled and the press became part of the spoil. Argyll was executed. |
