Sailm Dhaibhidh, the Psalms of David in Gaelic, was printed in 1774 on the first printing press established in Inverness. In 1684 the Church of Scotland's Synod of Argyll produced the first complete translation of the Psalter from Hebrew into Gaelic. For the 1774 Inverness edition, Alexander Macfarlane revised this first translation.

About the printer

The book was printed by Alexander Davidson for the bookseller William Sharp. Both were based at Inverness. This was the first time that a printing press was established north of the Highland Line. It is appropriate for the area that the first item printed on it was written in Gaelic.

Davidson was active as a printer and later bookseller in Inverness from 1774 until 1794.
