Smith, Elder & Company

Portrait of John Murray V

John Murray V bought publishers Smith, Elder & Company in 1916, following the death of Reginald Smith. The purchase brought with it great writers such as Charlotte Bronte and Arthur Conan Doyle.

There had been long-established links between the two publishing firms and between the Murray and Smith families.

As well as many authors, the sale brought Murray the Cornhill Magazine, the influential literary monthly which Smith, Elder & Company had published since 1860.

'Cornhill Magazine' was one of the 19th-century's most distinguished and important literary journals. Noted contributors included:

  • William Makepeace Thackeray
  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  • George Eliot
  • Elizabeth Gaskell
  • Anthony Trollope
  • John Ruskin
  • Patrick Leigh Fermor
  • Dervla Murphy
  • Freya Stark.

Murray paid £18,000 for Smith, Elder & Company.
