About Great Escapes
In 1836 John Murray published his first Handbook for Travellers, one of the first tourist guides ever published. The format he created is still with us today, but with more people using the internet and handheld technologies, how will tourist guides look in the future?
Inspired by Murray's Handbooks for Travellers, the National Library of Scotland worked with primary schools on Mull and Iona to explore that question. Together we created multimedia walks and tours around Mull and Iona. Find out more about them in the tour gallery section of this site.
The Great Escapes tours were created as short projects focusing on local studies, tourism and enterprise for Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils. We have included a 'create your own' section that includes notes and ideas on how to run a similar project with your own class.
To help you get started, we've produced a step-by-step guide and some suggested activities for creating your own Great Escape!
