Copyright agreement between Herman Melville and John Murray, 25 September 1850

American author Melville had complicated British copyright arrangements with Murray because he had separate agreements with his American publishers.

so as aforesaid written and composed by the said Herman Melville and called
entitled and known respectively and heretofore respectively published by the said John
Murray under and by the names and titles following that is to say “Narrative
of a four months residence among the Natives of a Valley of the Marquesas Islands
or a peep at Polynesian Life by Herman Melville” and “Omoo a Narrative of
Adventures in the south Seas being a sequel to the Residence in the Marquesas
Islands by Herman Melville Author of Typee” and all and every the entire
copyright term of years reversion and renewal of copyright and life interest of
him the said Herman Melville of and in the same several works and each
and every of them and each and every part thereof under and by virtue of the
present law of copyright of the United Kingdom of Great Britain with all the Introductions
Notes Appendices and other appurtenances and all the produce and profits which
shall or may at any time or times hereafter arise from printing publishing
and selling the same. And all the estate right title and interest which he
the said Herman Melville now has or shall or may hereafter acquire of and
in the same To have and to hold receive take and enjoy the said
several books works compositions and copyrights respectively and all and every
the profits produce and benefit thereof and all and singular other the
premises hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby assigned and
every of them with their and every of their appurtenances for and during
the term of Forty two years from the several days of the first publication
thereof respectively and for and during the natural life of him the
said Herman Melville in case he shall survive the said term of
forty two years and during all such further or other term or time as
he the said Herman Melville his executors administrators or assigns
now hath or shall or may at any time or times hereafter have or
acquire the right of printing and publishing the same respectively to
him the said John Murray his executors administrators and assigns
to and for his and their own use and benefit as his and their own
goods and chattels absolutely And the said Herman Melville doth hereby
for himself his heirs executors and administrators covenant promise
and agree to and with the said John Murray his executors administrators
and assigns in manner following that is to say that he the said
Herman Melville now hath in himself good right full power and lawful
and absolute authority by these presents to bargain sell assign and assure
the said several Books works or copyright thereof and of each and every
of them unto the said John Murray in manner and form aforesaid
according to the hue intent and meaning of these presents And also
that he the said Herman Melville hath not by any act deed
matter or thing whatsoever by him or by his authority done or
performed in anywise charged mortgaged or incumbered the said
copyrights and premises hereinbefore mentioned to be hereby assigned
or intended so to be or any part thereof in any manner whatsoever
And also that he the said Herman Melville his executors and
administrators and all and every person or persons claiming or to claim
