Copyright agreement between Herman Melville and John Murray, 25 September 1850

American author Melville had complicated British copyright arrangements with Murray because he had separate agreements with his American publishers.

This Indenture made this twenty fifth day of September One
thousand eight hundred and fifty Between Herman Melville of the
town of
Pittsfield, Berkshire County, State of Massachusets in the United States of America Esquire of the one part
and John Murray of Albemarle Street in the County of Middlesex in the
United Kingdom of Great Britain Bookseller and Publisher of the other part
Whereas the said Herman Melville in the month of December One
thousand eight hundred and forty five contracted with the said John Murray for
the sale to him in consideration of the sum of One hundred pounds of the entire
Copyright of and in the work written and composed by the said Herman Melville
and called it narrative of a four months residence among the Natives of a Valley
of the Marquesas Islands by Herman Melville and in or about the month of
March One thousand eight hundred and forty seven the said Herman Melville
contracted with the said John Murray for the sale to him in
consideration of the sum of One hundred and fifty pounds of the entire
copyright of and in another work also written and composed by the said
Herman Melville and called “Omoo a Narrative of Adventures in the South
Seas being a Sequel to the Residence in the Marquesas Islands” both which
said sums of money were respectively duly paid by the said John Murray
to the said Herman Melville as he doth hereby admit and acknowledge but
no Assignment in writing of the said several copyrights has ever been made by
the said Herman Melville to the said John Murray And whereas the said
works were respectively first published in this Country by the said John Murray
on the several days and times hereafter mentioned that is to say the said
work called “A Narrative of a four months residence amongst the Natives of a
Valley of the Marquesas Islands by Herman Melville” in two parts the first
part of which together with the entire work as a Volume was first
published on the twenty sixth day of February One thousand eight
hundred and forty six and the second part of which separately was first
published on the first day of April One thousand eight hundred and
forty six and the said work called “Omoo a Narrative of Adventures
in the South Seas” being a sequel to the Residence in the Marquesas
Islands was first published on the twenty seventh day of March One
thousand eight hundred and forty seven And whereas the said
John Murray has applied to the said Herman Melville to execute for
him the assignment hereinafter contained which the said Herman Melville
hath agreed to do Now this Indenture Witnesseth that in
consideration of the said two several sums of money amounting together to
the sum of Two hundred and fifty pounds so as aforesaid heretofore paid by the
said John Murray to the said Herman Melville and in consideration of ten
shillings of lawful British money in hand also paid to the said Herman
Melville by the said John Murray the receipt whereof the said Herman
Melville doth hereby acknowledge He the said Herman Melville Doth grant
bargain sell assign transfer and set over unto the said John Murray his executors
administrators and assigns All those the two several books works and compositions
