{c) Sholto James Douglas, baptised October 1732 (East Calder
Register).
(d) Robert Douglas, baptised 3rd February 1738 {East Calder
Register). He was a planter in St. Christopher, and died
without issue.
(e) John Leigh Douglas, baptised 21st October 1741 {East Calder
Register). He was Admiral of the White when he died,
November 18 10. He married his cousin, Charlotte,
daughter of John Douglas, M.P. (No. 421), but died
without issue.
(/) Jane Douglas, the eldest daughter, married Aretas Akers of
the islands of St. Christopher and St. Vincent, in the
West Indies. She died 1768, and he died 1785. Their
descendant is the Rt. Hon. Aretas Akers-Douglas of
Chilston Park and Mailing Abbey, who took the name
of Douglas, on succeeding to Baads and Craigs, on the
death of his kinsman, James Douglas Stoddart Douglas,
in 1875 {see below, g).
Hmi0 granted to Rt. Hon. A. Akers-Douglas by Garter in
1875 are the same as No. 417 ^ with the addition of an
Imperial crown proper above the heart, the arrow is proper.
MOTTO : " Sapientia et Veritas."
{g) Mary Douglas, married Rev. James Stoddart, and her de-
scendant possessed Baads from 1873 till 1875.
(423) Alexander Douglas of Finsbury Square, London, born 1731. Here-
acquired Baads in 1787, and entailed it. He married Miss Taylor, and
died 31st August 1797, leaving issue : —
{a) George Douglas. He bought Chilston, in Kent, and suc-
ceeded to Baads. He died unmarried in 1833.
(b) Robert Douglas, predeceased his brother without issue.
{c) Isabel Douglas, married Robert Houston, and her descen-
dants possessed Baads from 1833 till 1873.
Other Douglases.
(424) DOUGLAS OF Bealford. — Argent, a heart gules crowned or, between three
mullets azure ; all within a bordure nebuly of the last (Robson's British
Herald). [Plate VIII., fig. 1.]
(425) DOUGLAS OF Bruntwood, Cheshire, recorded in Lyon Office 1861. — Argent,
a heart gules ensigned with an imperial crown proper, within a bordure
azure charged with three mullets of the first, on a chief sable as many
mascles or. CREST : A man's heart imperially crowned proper and winged
gules. MOTTO : "Forward! " [Plate VIII., fig. 2.]
(426) Sir William Douglas of Castle Douglas, Bt., recorded in Lyon Office
1802. — Azure, on a chevron or, between two lions rampant and affront 'e '{?),
in chief argent, ducally crowned of the second, and a ship, sails furled, in
base of the last, three mullets of the field. On a chief parted per pale, first,
Argent, a heart imperially crowned proper ; second, Argent, a thistle proper.
CREST : A heart imperially crowned proper winged argent, each wing
charged with a mullet sable. Supporters : Dexter, A sailor affronte" with
hat, blue jacket, red vest, white trousers, and a cutlass point downwards in
