Hamilton. SUPPORTERS : Two lions guardant argent, each with a rose
slipped gules in one of his forepaws.
(173) Dunbar Hamilton afterwards Douglas of Baldoon, born December
1722 ; died 24th May 1799. In 1744 he succeeded his granduncle
(No. 169) as fourth Earl of Selkirk. He married, 3rd December
1758, Helen, daughter of Hon. John Hamilton, son of sixth Earl of
Haddington, who died 28th November 1802, leaving: —
(a) Sholto, born 3rd September 1759 ; died 4th July 1760.
(b) Basil, born 16th March 1763 ; died unmarried, 5th Nov-
ember 1794.
(c) John, died unmarried, 9th July 1797.
(d) Dunbar, died unmarried, November 1796.
(e) Alexander, died unmarried, 24th June 1794.

(g) Thomas (No. 174).
(174) Thomas, fifth Earl of Selkirk, born June 1771 ; died 8th April 1820.
He married, 24th November 1807, Jean, only daughter of James Wedder-
burn Colvile, brother of Sir John Wedderburn, Bt, who died 10th June
1871.
Hmi8 recorded in Lyon Office, 1799. — First Grand Quarter : Argent, a man's
heart gules imperially crowned proper, on a chief, azure, three mullets of the
first. Second Grand Quarter : 1. Azure, a lion rampant argent crowned or.
2. Or, a lion rampant gules surmounted by a ribbon sable. 3. Argent, tliree
roses gules. 4. Or, a fess chequy azure and argent surmounted by a bend
sable charged with three buckles of the first. Third Grand Quarter :
1 and 4. Gules, three cinquefoils ermine. 2 and 3. Argent, a galley, sails
furled, sable, flagged gules. Fourth Grand Quarter : Gules, a lion rampant
argent within a bordure of tlie second charged with ten roses of the first,
barbed vert. Crest : A salamander in flames. SUPPORTERS : Dexter,
A savage wreathed about the loins with laurel ; Sinister, An antelope
proper. MOTTO : "famais arriere."' [Plate V., fig. 2.]
He left an only son : —
(175) Dunbar, James, sixth Earl of Selkirk, born 22nd April 1809; died
without issue nth April 1885. He married, 29th June 1878, Cicely,
daughter of Sir Philip Grey-Egerton, Bt. On his death the Earldom
of Selkirk was assumed by his kinsman and heir-male the Duke of
Hamilton, but the resignation of the title to the second Earl (No. 168),
implies that the Earldom should go to the next younger brother of
anyone succeeding to the Dukedom.
(176) Archibald Hamilton of Riccartoun and Pardovan, Linlithgow,
seventh son of No. 147, born 1673 ; died 5th April 1754. He married
first, Anne, daughter of Charles, second Lord Lucas ; second, 17th
December 1718, Lady Hamilton, widow of Sir Francis Hamilton ; third,
29th September 17 19, Jane, daughter of James, sixth Earl of Abercorn,
leaving issue : —
(«) Charles, died 10th September 1751. Married Mary, daughter
of Colonel Dufresne, issue a daughter.
(b) Frederic, died 181 1. Married Miss Daniel, issue a daughter.
(c) Archibald, drowned 30th May 1744.
(d) Sir WilHam, born 1730; died 6th April 1803. He married
first, 1758, Miss Barlow, who died 1782 ; second, 1791,
Emma Hart, who as Lady Hamilton was the inspirer of
Lord Nelson, and Romney the painter.
