Captain G. A. Whitla.

tain A. W. Mackenzie.
(e) Basil, born 1866; died in infancy.
(168) Charles, third son of No. 147, born 3rd February 1663. Succeeded under his
father's resignation of 1688 as SECOND EARL OF SELKIRK. Died un-
married 13th March 1739, and was succeeded by his brother: —
(169) JOHN, born 1665 ; died 3rd December 1744. Created, 14th April 1697, Earl
OF RUGLEN, Viscount of Riccarton and Lord Hillhouse. In 1739 he
succeeded his brother as THIRD EARL OF SELKIRK. He married first,
about 1694, Anne Kennedy, daughter of John, seventh Earl of Cassillis,
and secondly, 22nd March 1701, Elizabeth, widow of John Kennedy,
Master of Cassillis, and daughter of Sir Francis Boteler, who died s.p.
10th March 1734. By his first wife the Earl had : —
(«) William, Lord Riccartoun, born 1696 ; died unmarried in
his father's lifetime, 20th February 1742.
(b) Anne, succeeded as Countess of Ruglen, born 5th April 1698 ;
died 2 1 st April 1748. She married first William
Douglas, second Earl of March (No. 36), and second, in
1747, Anthony Sawyer.
(170) GEORGE, fifth son of No. 147, born 1666; died 29th January 1737 ; created, 3rd
January 1695-96, Earl of ORKNEY, Viscount of Kirkwall and Baron
Dechmont. He married, 25th November 1695, Elizabeth, daughter of
Sir Edward Villiers, who died 19th April 1733, leaving a daughter: —
(a) Anne, Countess of Orkney, from whom the present Earl
descends.
BVITIS. — First Grand Quarter : Azure, a ship at anchor within a double tressure
flory-counter-flory or (Orkney). Second and third Grand Quarters :
1 and 4. Gules, three cinquefoils pierced ermine (Hamilton). 2 and 3.
Argent, a galley with sails furled, sable (Arran). Fourth Grand Quarter :
Argent, a man's heart gules, crowned with an imperial crown proper, on a
chief, azure, three stars of the first (Douglas). CREST : In a ducal coronet
or, an oak tree fructed and penetrated transversely in tlie main stem by a
frame saiv proper, the frame or. SUPPORTERS : Dexter, An antelope
argent, his horns, ducal collar, chain and hoofs or ; Sinister, A stag proper,
attired, collared, chained and hoofed as the dexter. MOTTO : " Through "

(171) Basil Hamilton, sixth son of No. 147, born 1671 ; drowned 1701. He
married Mary, grand-daughter and heiress of Sir David Dunbar of
Baldoon, who died 15th May 1760. He had issue : —
(a) William of Baldoon, died 1703. (b) Basil (No. 172).
(172) Basil Hamilton of Baldoon, died November 1742. He married Isabella,
daughter of Hon. Alexander Mackenzie, son of fourth Earl of Seaforth,
who died, April 1725, leaving: —
(a) Dunbar (No. 173). (b) Basil, died young.
BnH6 recorded in Lyon Office, 1733. — First and Fourth Grand Quarters:
1 and 4. Gides, three cinquefoils ermine. 2 and 3. Argent, a galley, sails
furled, sable. Second Grand Quarter : Argent, a man's heart gules,
crowned or, on a chief azure three mullets of the first. Third Grand
Quarter : Gules, a lion rampant argent within a bordure of the second
charged with ten roses of the first. Crest and MOTTO as Duke of
