THE DOUGLASES OF ANGUS 41
(120) Archibald, sixth Earl of Angus, bom about 1489; died before 22nd
January 1557. He succeeded his grandfather and married three times.
First, Margaret Hepburn, daughter of Patrick, first Earl of Bothwell, who
died 1513. Second, Queen Margaret (Tudor), widow of King James IV.,
who divorced" him 1528. Third, Margaret Maxwell, daughter of Robert,
Lord Maxwell. By his last wife he had : —
{a) James Douglas, Master of Angus, who died young, Feb-
ruary 1548.
The Earl had also a natural son : —
{b) George Douglas, appointed Bishop of Moray 1573. Died
1590.

HmtS of the Earl on Seal, 1520. — 1. A lion rampant. 2. A lion rampant
debruised by a ribbon. 3. Five piles in point {/edworth Forest). 4. A /ess
chequy surmounted by a bend charged with three buckles. En surtout, A
heart, on a chief three stars. Crest : A peacock with tail expanded.
SUPPORTERS, within a wreathed paling: Dexter, A savage; Sinister,

(121) Sir George Douglas of Pittendreich (second son of No. 119), was bom
about 1490; died August 1552. He married Elizabeth, daughter and
heiress of David Douglas of Pittendreich, They had : —
(a) David (No. 122). (b) James (No. 124).
Sir George had also a natural son : —
(c) George Douglas of Parkhead (No. 129).

(122) David, seventh Earl OF Angus, born about 1 5 1 5 ; died June 1557. He
married, contract, 8th May 1552, Margaret, daughter of John Hamilton
of Samuelton, and widow of James Johnston, younger, of that Ilk, and
had:—
(123) Archibald, eighth Earl of Angus, born about 1555; died 4th August
1588. In 1586 he succeeded as sixth Earl OF MORTON. He married
three times. First, 13th June 1573, Mary Erskine, daughter of John,
Earl of Mar, who died 3rd May 1575. Second, 25th December 1575,
Margaret Leslie, daughter of Andrew, Earl of Rothes. She divorced him
in 1587. Third, July 1587, Jean Lyon, daughter of John, eighth Lord
Glamis, and widow of Robert Douglas, younger, of Lochleven (No. 326).
He had not a son by any of his wives. The Earldom of Angus devolved
on his cousin (No. 139), and the Earldom of Morton on his distant kins-
man (No. 325).

(124) James, fourth Earl of Morton, second son of No. 121. He married,
before 1543, Elizabeth, second of the three daughters and co-heirs of
James, third Earl of Morton (No. 261). This lady was long insane, and
