The Douglases of Cavers.
THE pedigree of this family is based on that given in Wilson's Hawick and its
Old Memories, and privately printed pedigrees of the Douglases of Friarshavv,
and now of Springwood Park. Other authorities mentioned in the text.
(78) Archibald Douglas of Cavers, called " Black Archibald," was the natural
son of James, second Earl of Douglas and Mar (No. 9). He was granted
the estate of Cavers, with the heritable sheriffship of Teviotdale, by his
aunt, Lady Isobel Douglas, Countess of Mar, in 1404. He married
Margaret , and died about 1435. He was succeeded by his son : —
(79) William Douglas of Cavers, who died 8th January 1464. His son : —
(80) Sir Archibald Douglas of Cavers, died in i486.
HrtTl0 on Seal, 1466. — 1 and 4. A heart, on a chief three stars. 2 and 3. A bend
between six cross crosslets fitchy (Laing).
He left a son : —
(81) Sir William Douglas of Cavers, died 26th October 1506. He is men-
tioned, with his late father, 1494 {Exchequer Rolls). He left two sons : —
(a) William Douglas, probably died in his father's lifetime.
(b) James (No. 82).
(82) Sir James Douglas of Cavers, died 28th September 1545. Married, 1537,
Elizabeth, daughter of John Murray of Fala Hill, and had three sons : —
(a) Sir James (No. 83).
(b) William Douglas of Friarshaw, security for his brother James
in 1545 (Acts 0/ Parliament). (See No. 97.)
(c) Robert Douglas, married Helen, daughter and heiress of
Douglas of Todhoillis or Todalia, and had a son : —
(1) James of Todhoillis, living 1584 (Acts of Parlia-
ment).
HriTIS on Seal, 1512. — A heart, on a chief three stars (Laing).
(83) SIR JAMES DOUGLAS, served heir to his father 27th October 1545. Married
Christian, daughter of Andrew Ker of Fernihurst, and died July 1558,
leaving three sons : —
(a) William (No. 84).
(b) James Douglas.
(c) Robert Douglas, brother of William, 1585 (Acts of Parlia-
ment).
(84) Sir William Douglas OF Cavers, mentioned in Privy Council Register,
1561-89. Married Euphemia Ker, daughter of Sir Wm. Ker of Cessford,
and had two sons : —
(a) James (No. 85).
(b) Thomas Douglas, brother of James, 1605 (Privy Council
Register).
