have obtained a great and glorious victo-
ry. The battle began between feven
and eight in the morning, and continued
till about three in the afternoon. It has
not been a cheap battle to the army, ef-
pecially the Dutch foot have fuffered
much. We attacked them in ftrong en-
trenchments. The moft that we fuffered
was by their cannon. Our lofs is confi-
derable, but the greater]: is poor Colonel
Cranfton. He was killed by a cannon
ball (fitting upon the head of the regi-
ment) ihot in at the left pap, and out at
the back. He fpoke not a word. Cap-
tain Shaw alfo is. killed, his thigh bone
being broke, and alfo Enfign Inglis. You
will have, heard that Captain Lawfon and
Lieutenant Simpfon were wounded two
days ago at another cannonading, when
we came up firft to this camp, for our
regiment happened to be polled in a
place which was moft expofed to their
cannon of any in the army. Lawfon's is
very flight ; it is a contulion in the chin,
but no bones broke. Simpfon's is in the
body, but not dangerous.
Enfign Burnet alfo got a more danger-
ous wound in the neck, which I am afraid
