2 I . Retting this day, I went into Aeth
and viewed all our latt year's attacks, and
from a Britifh fleet which was to fail up the Var, and
proceed from thence to deftroy Toulon, the gieat ar-
fenal of France The fleet under the command of
Sir Claude fly Shovel accomplilhed their object in the
mod undaunted manner, but the Italian army did not
reach Toulon until Teat fupulies of provifions
and troops were thrown into that city, and ftiong
entrenchments and fortifications raifed to protect
it. The emperor, bent on the cor.queft of Na-
ples, gave imperfect fi pport to the expedition ; and
from all thefe caufes, it not onlv failed of fuccefs, but
produced great lofs to the army, who made good how-
ever their retreat without fuftaining further injury,
after producing confiderable diltrefs in the enemy's
country .
