The greater part of the Manufcripts from
which the following pages are printed, were
fold a few years ago as wafle paper. But
they happily came into the poffeffion of thofe
who difcovered the writer of them, and
perceived their value. They were after-
wards Jhewn to Mr John Newton of Lon-
don, who having perufed fever al parts of
them, exprejfed his opinion th&t their pu-
blication might he ufeful, and agreed to
recommend them in the following Preface %
written more than five years ago. He ad-
vifed that with this view they fhould he put
into the hands of Mr John Campbell^
then of this place, now Minifler of the
Gofpel at King si and, near London, Mr
Campbell be/lowed much time and atten-
tion upon them, and tranfcribed the Extracts
and mofl of the Letters here prefented to the
Public — a tajk of no fmall labour and diffi-
culty, from the fmallnefs and faintnefs of the
character in which they are written. His
numerous engagements, however, prevented^
