therefore, this lenity been extended, and the
pledge of honour required, the fame of his
Majesty's clemency would have been cele-
brated throughout the British empire, and
he would have reigned in the hearts of all;
but this did not accord with the mean dic-
tates of revenge, and with the selfish inten-
tions of the clan act; the honour and glory
therefore of the sovereign, and the future
peace of his realms, must bend to party
views, and to narrow minded and short
sighted policy, America has, at different
times, been peopled by Britain, with pu-
ritans, non-conformists, non-jurants, qua-
kers, presbyterians, papists, rebels, and
thieves, and by kidnapping and emigra-
tion, until the motley progeny became
sturdy enough to rebel, and to become
a piercing thorn in the side of the parent,
and Britain has been forced to acknow-
ledge them of age, and fit to guide them-
selves.
The cup of calamity, filled up for Kep-
poch and his people, anno 1687, is now
extended, and the rod of affliction, the clan
