\ias however been revised as much as it was possible
to do without substantial interference with its orisrinal
style and phraseology ; and the work, it is hoped, will
be found worthy of the reputation of the Author, not-
withstanding that it was first written in a fragmentary
form, and at various times, and that Mr. Macgregor
himself had not an opportunity of revising and pre-
paring it for publication in this form.
