(Note by the Editor. — In Black's History of Brechin, the
following appear among the Town Councillors : — And : Fair-
weather, Councillor, 1682. — Alexander Fairweather, Councillor
and Hospital Master, 1691-98; Bailie 1699 to 1703; Dean of
Guild, 1705. — An Alexander Fairweather, signs as a Witness in
the Brechin Register, to the baptism of Alexander, son of
James Don, in 1657.)
Although few Fairweathers figure in the learned professions,
yet one of the oldest recorded was a Lawyer ; Walter Fair-
weather, Notary and Presbyter of the Diocese of Dunkeld,
about 1547 ; whose name occurs in connection with lands held
by that See in Menmuir. He witnessed, and probably drafted
(in Latin) at least three Charters, connected with the Estate of
Findowrie, which then marched with, or was more likely partly
included in, Menmuir. In one of the Deeds he is called
' Schir Valtro Fairvedder,' a title of civil knighthood not un-
common among high placed Churchmen before the Reforma-
tion.
In the Clerical Profession the following names appear. —
The Revd. Thomas Fairweather, of Forfarshire, graduated at
King's College, Aberdeen, along with Alexander Arbuthnott,
Junior, of Findowrie, 1675. The Revd. Alexander Fairweather,
