been printed, he gives a full account of the Earl of
Gowrie and his brother. He shews the absurdi-
ties in the King's publication, and points out con-
tradictions in the depositions of the witnesses. He
states several important particulars well known in
his time, and which coincide with the traditions
handed down, especially in Perth and its neigh-
bourhood.
He concludes his account with the following
Latin distich, which he says was seen many years
painted above the chimney-brace of the castle of
Ruthven, now called Huntingtower :
" Vera din laiitant, sed longo te?nporis tisu
Emergunt tandem, qua; latuere din."
That is, There are truths which long lie hid, but
in a course of time, these truths which were long in
darkness emerge into light.
