studied homeliness about them also, that must prove specially attractive to the people
of Biggar themselves ; indeed, it may in a word be said that so carefully has our author
gathered and grouped the valuable and interesting historic, archaeologic, and biographic
materials at his disposal, so tastefully and judiciously has he adjusted them, each in its
own place, associated with its own times, and so delightfully has the pencil of the litho-
graphist and the burin of the engraver come to his aid in the illustration of the more
important objects of interest in the locality that the work maybe said to be perfect, or,

" This is a volume teeming with antiquarian lore of the choicest description, and
with drawings representing Roman and Druidical instruments found in the district, to-
gether with many having their origin in this ancient kingdom of ours, such as the
ancient stone querne or hand mill for grinding corn, which was found at Coulter, &c.
The drawings could only be made at great expense, but independent of the antiquari-
an lore connected with them, the volume is replete with the most amusing and inter-
esting reading. The book is full of historical interest. We present our dutiful regards
to its accomplished author. We add with peculiar pleasure that it has been dedicated
with great propriety to Adam Sim, Esq. of Coulter."
