Experiences of the Great War

Arrival in France

Lance Corporal Ramage and his comrades in the Gordon Highlanders arrived on the Continent to a rapturous welcome from the French.

Ramage describes the scene as they sailed up the Seine:

'People on shore waved hands and cheered. Men in boats shouted "Hooray" & "Goodbye" — their boats hooted a welcome to which our boats hooted in reply as we sped past … our boats go so quickly that people rush out of doors to the shore, while we are some distance off, to be in time to wave us a welcome with hand, handkerchief, hats, Union Jacks, & tricolors … "Heep, heep, Hooray" they shout & "Welcome to France".'
