Experiences of the Great War

Discharge

George Ramage left hospital in Roehampton on his discharge from the British Army in 1916. He had only been at the Front for three months. In contrast, his treatment and convalescence had taken over a year.

His release came while the great Battle of the Somme raged on in Flanders.

In his diary entry for 28 July 1916 he recalls the events leading up to his discharge.

'Artificial arm in rough state fitted on a week after measurement. Finished article handed over a week later — driven to King Georges hospital where got pair of hoops & overcoat & railway warrant home, & £1. Instead of civilian suit am to get 17/6 [17 shillings and sixpence — approximately 80p today]. Got discharge papers a few days later dated 30th Aug 1916.'
