Experiences of the Great War

Official photographs

Our collection of First World War 'Official photographs' contains hundreds of black-and-white images, mainly of the Western Front during the First World War. Official British war photographers took many of them for propaganda purposes.

The photos are among the papers of Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) — see our section on 'The General' for an overview of his experience of the war. The Haig Papers [NLS reference: Acc.3155] also contain Douglas Haig's diaries.
