The moment the First World War broke out in 1914, Mairi Chisholm must have decided to play a positive role in the war effort.

She went to London, joined the Women's Emergency Corps, transferred to the Flying Ambulance service — where she met Elsie Knocker — and, before the year was out, was driving an ambulance on the front line in Belgium.
